Please send courteously worded faxes, emails, or airmail letters urging compliance with the peace accords and protection for Guatemalan human rights defenders, under siege for the past two years. (If you can write in Spanish, please send letters in Spanish). If faxing, please note that it can be difficult getting through to some of these fax numbers. Please be patient and keep trying. If a voice answers say: "fax por favor" and wait for the signal. You can also mail letters to Amnesty International's Midwest Regional Office, and they will be forwarded. In your letters, please:

• Explain that you are writing because of the concerns raised in AI's report Guatemala's Lethal Legacy: Past Impunity and Renewed Human Rights Violations
• Express serious concern that after five years the important human rights provisions of the 1996 Peace Accords have not been implemented, including:
  • provisions to protect human rights defenders, and to promote their work
  • provisions to investigate military officers accused of grave human rights violations
  • provisions to limit the role of the military in civil society and in particular, to dismantle the Estado Mayor Presidencial, the Presidential General Staff whose members have been implicated in numerous cases of torture, "disappearance" and extrajudicial execution
• Call for immediate investigation of all attacks against human rights defenders
