New Book: Silence on the Mountain, by Daniel Wilkinson. Wonderful photos. Silence on the Mountain is a virtuoso work of reporting and a masterfully plotted narrative tracing the history of Guatemala?s thirty-six-year internal war, a conflict that claimed the lives of some 200,000 people, the vast majority of whom died (or were "disappeared") at the hands of the U.S.-backed military government.

Our Culture is Our Resistance - Photo Essay by Johathon Moller - Another wonderful set of photos and stories. Mr. Moller is a human rights advocate and free-lance photographer who worked in Guatemala from 1993 to 2001, principally with indigenous Mayans uprooted by the civil war. He spent much of my time in rural areas, including the Communities of Population in Resistance (CPRs). Most recently he worked with a forensic anthropology team, documenting the exhumations of clandestine cemeteries. End of the Innocence: The 1954 CIA Coup in Guatemala - It is a research paper writen by Mike Lehman on the CIA's involvement in the 1954 coup.  References and access easy for a number of relevant declassified CIA source documents. Mike Lehman is a political activist who did quite a bit of work in the 1980s on Central American issues.

CIIDH Data and Reports on-line - the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) has tools to generate charts, reports, queries, etc. regarding human rights abuses in Guatemala. The huge database of  information was requested to be put on-line by CONADEHGUA, a group of grass-roots human rights organizations in Guatemala.

AAAS Directory of Human Rights Resources on the Internet - the American Association for the Advancement of Science contains a huge database of Human Rights information as well as on-line tools for queries.  Data can be obtained in the form of reports, charts, diagrams, etc.

Archbishops Office of Guatemala - (English/Spanish) At the center of the human rights struggle in Guatemala, the Archbishop's Office on Human Righs in Guatemala produced the REHMI report (Recovery of the Historical Memory), for which Bishop Juan Gerardi Conedera lost his life on April 26, 1998.
